LES SAUTEURS: Critique

April 03, 2017

February 09, 2017

Song Chuan explores the generational and regional divides of Chinese culture in his sophomore film.

Thanks to a poetic yet probing approach, Ciao Ciao’s contemplative take on the homecoming narrative strikes both an emotional and visual chord. Writer/director Song Chuan brings a painterly eye to the plight of his titular protagonist - a city-dwelling daughter reluctantly visiting her rural parents - while convincingly exploring cultural divisions of both gender and location.

DARK FORTUNE (FINISTERES GLUCK): FILM REVIEW | TALLINN 2016

December 04, 2016

Swiss director Stefan Haupt works with his actress wife Eleni Haupt on this prize-winning literary adaptation about the aftershocks of a family tragedy.

The writer-director Stefan Haupt earned festival prizes galore with his 2014 docudrama The Circle, which Switzerland nominated as its official Oscars submission. More formally conventional, Haupt’s follow-up project is a measured, dutiful adaptation of Dark Fortune, Lukas Hartmann’s 2011 novel about a tragedy that devastates one family and shakes up another. The material may be somber but the characters are engaging, the performances strong and the overall treatment elegant.

Jonathan Cenzual Burley's third film is a rural western, shot with few resources but oodles of inventiveness, which harks back to the rugged, melancholic, Castilian spirit of author Miguel Delibes.

The movie – which combines hugely talented narrative and visual tools next to others that betray their scant resources also has a hint of film noir as it rises up in strong condemnation of that unstoppable epidemic called greed. [...] The Shepherd contains more truth than the films with colossal multi-million-euro budgets that tend to monopolise the box office...

In a small way, “Go Home” reflects the life of writer-director Jihane Chouaib. Born in Lebanon, but raised in Mexico, she found her family home in a similar state of disarray to that of the film’s main character, Nada, as she returns to her homeland and attempts to unearth family secrets and remove the shroud of secrecy around the fate of her grandfather in the 90-minute feature.

Estonian director Vallo Toomla makes a cool, cutting debut with a nervy home-invasion thriller that works entirely by invitation.

From Roberto Rossellini’s “Voyage to Italy” to Maren Ade’s “Everyone Else” to Angelina Jolie’s “By the Sea,” there exists a rich and lacerating subgenre of marital drama in which beautiful couples turn ugly on vacation. But rarely have two marrieds sabotaged their own R&R time quite as comprehensively as the chilly protagonists of “Pretenders,” a lithe little psychological puzzler in which lives are stolen, swapped and quite possibly ruined in the space of one ostensibly tranquil weekend. Reminiscent in premise of the Raymond Carver story “Neighbors,” only expanded to the cruellest possible conclusion, this tart, poised debut for Estonian director Vallo Toomla is probably too dispassionate to woo major international distributors, but following its San Sebastian premiere, further festival programmers should extend “Pretenders’” travel plans.

The Way Out marked Petr Vaclav’s comeback to feature filmmaking after a 13-year hiatus. Before finishing the social drama that focused on marginalised members of the Roma community, he was already preparing his next project, We Are Never Alone, a harrowing parable about modern society that is now screening at the Toronto International Film Festival

September 07, 2016

Fans of Quentin Dupieux should rejoice because I haven’t seen a film this absurdly hilarious sinceWrong. Petr Václav‘s We Are Never Alone is definitely bleaker, darker, and strangely realist, but it has that same sense of subtle humor to give you pause about the meaning of what’s thus far been viewed. The story concerns two families with certifiably insane patriarchs, a local pimp searching for escape, and the whore he deludes himself into thinking loves him despite her pining over the father of her daughter in jail. They each have their own personal problems that should be uniquely particular to their individual psychological imperfections and yet when they converge they’re insanely revealed to be kindred spirits spinning around atop this cesspool we call Earth.

September 07, 2016

In the Czech Republic, where the historically persecuted Roma community continues to have little, there is certainly no shortage of irony, as exemplified by director Petr Vaclav’s “We Are Never Alone,” a darkly comic slice of life set inside a village built around a prison, where it is the residents who would seem to be incarcerated.
